How AI Detects Candidate Fraud and Boosts Placement Rates

In July 2026, the FBI and ten other countries issued a joint alert on a specific, active threat: North Korean IT workers infiltrating companies worldwide using stolen identities, forged documents, and proxy networks to generate revenue for the regime’s weapons programs. This isn’t theoretical:

  • This group was tied to nearly half of all state-sponsored intrusions against the tech sector between April 2025 and March 2026, per CrowdStrike.
  • Operatives are using AI-generated resumes, fabricated portfolio sites, and LLM-written cover letters, then deploying real-time deepfakes during video interviews to impersonate the identity on the application.
  • Eight people have already been sentenced in 2026 for facilitating these schemes, including U.S. nationals running “laptop farms”, housing company-issued equipment domestically so operatives could remote in and appear to be working from a legitimate U.S. address.
  • Even federal hiring isn’t immune. Investigators confirmed a North Korean remote IT worker was placed inside a U.S. federal agency, despite formal vetting procedures already in place.

If a government process with formal vetting missed it, a standard corporate intake process has an even bigger gap.

Why this is a hiring problem: once a fraudulent hire has system access, the fallout isn’t limited to wasted payroll. Customer records, financial data, and sensitive company information can all sit on systems reachable from a single compromised remote workstation.
